Australia’s skilled visa program
It is all about welcoming people with valuable skills and experience who can make a real contribution to the country’s workforce and communities. These visas open the door to living and working in Australia, whether on your own, with the support of a state or territory, or in one of Australia’s beautiful regional areas. Depending on your situation, you might be looking for permanent residency straight away or a provisional visa that gives you a pathway to stay here long term.
The main options are the Skilled Independent Visa (subclass 189), the Skilled Nominated Visa (subclass 190), and the Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (subclass 491)—each with its own set of requirements and benefits.

Skilled Independent Visa (189)
The Skilled Independent Visa (subclass 189) is a permanent visa for skilled workers who are not sponsored by an employer, a state or territory, or a family member. It’s based on a points system, where you are invited to apply after submitting an Expression of Interest through SkillSelect.
Skilled Nominated Visa (190)
The Skilled Nominated Visa (subclass 190) is a permanent visa for skilled workers who are nominated by an Australian state or territory government. Like the 189 visa, it works on a points-based system and requires you to submit an Expression of Interest through SkillSelect.
Skilled Work Regional Visas (491)
The Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (subclass 491) is a five-year visa for skilled workers who are nominated by a state or territory government, or sponsored by an eligible family member living in a designated regional area. This visa is points-tested and requires you to lodge an Expression of Interest through SkillSelect.
Skilled Regional (Permanent) Visa (191)
The Skilled Regional (Permanent) Visa (subclass 191) provides a pathway to permanent residency for skilled workers who have lived and worked in a designated regional area of Australia while holding an eligible provisional visa, such as the Subclass 491 Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa or the Subclass 494 Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) Visa.
