Australia’s Parent Visas
Parent visas in Australia provide pathways for parents of Australian citizens, permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens to join their family in Australia, either temporarily or permanently. There are a number of parent visa options available, each with different eligibility requirements, costs, and processing times. Some visas allow parents to stay in Australia for a temporary period, while others provide a pathway to permanent residency and long-term family reunification. Factors such as whether your parents are applying from inside or outside Australia, their age, sponsorship requirements, and government capping and queueing arrangements all influence which visa may be suitable. Because parent visa processing times can vary significantly, it is important to understand the different options before deciding on the most appropriate pathway.

Contributory Parent Visas (Subclass 143 & 173)
Contributory Parent visas allow eligible parents of Australian citizens, permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens to live in Australia permanently or transition toward permanent residency. These visas involve significantly higher government charges in exchange for generally faster processing times when compared to non-contributory parent visas. They are often chosen by families seeking long-term settlement in Australia within a shorter timeframe.
Non-Contributory Parent Visa (Subclass 103)
The Non-Contributory Parent visa provides a permanent residency pathway for eligible parents at a lower overall government cost. However, this visa is subject to very long processing times due to government capping and queueing arrangements. It may be suitable for families who are able to wait and are seeking a more affordable permanent option.
Aged Parent Visa (Subclass 804)
The Aged Parent visa is designed for parents who are old enough to qualify for the Australian Age Pension and who are already in Australia at the time of application. This visa allows eligible parents to apply onshore and, once granted, live in Australia permanently. Processing times can be lengthy due to high demand and limited places.
Contributory Aged Parent Visas (Subclass 864 & 884)
Contributory Aged Parent visas are onshore visas for eligible parents who meet the age requirement and wish to pursue faster processing by paying higher government charges. These visas allow parents to remain in Australia during processing and provide a pathway to permanent residency and long-term settlement once granted.
Sponsored Parent (Temporary) Visa (Subclass 870)
The Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa allows eligible parents to stay in Australia for a temporary period, usually for several years at a time. This visa does not provide permanent residency but enables families to spend extended time together in Australia. It may suit parents who do not wish to pursue permanent migration or who are considering longer-term visa options .
